Rep. Boebert Presents Long-Overdue Purple Heart to Army Veteran Joel O’Connor
Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (CO-04) hosted a special pinning ceremony on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at the Cherokee Ranch and Castle to present Army Veteran Joel O’Connor with the Purple Heart — an honor more than two decades overdue.
Joel O’Connor grew up in Colorado. Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, he enlisted in the United States Army as a tank crew member. In support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, he served two combat tours in central Iraq and attained the rank of Specialist.
On the Fourth of July 2005, while serving as the gunner for Dakota 6 (Battalion Commander) during combat operations with 1st Battalion, 13th Armor Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, his detail was directly engaged by the enemy. For his actions that day, Specialist O’Connor received the Combat Action Badge. More than twenty years later, he is awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in that same engagement.
“It is an honor to help right this long-overdue recognition for Specialist Joel O’Connor,” said Rep. Boebert. “His courage and sacrifice on the Fourth of July 2005 exemplify the best of Colorado and the United States Army. We are proud to stand with him and his family as he finally receives the Purple Heart he earned in service to our nation.”
“Receiving this Purple Heart after more than twenty years means the world to me and my family,” said Specialist Joel O’Connor. “I am grateful for the recognition of the sacrifices made that day and for the support that made this possible.”
O’Connor and his wife, Natalie, raise their three daughters — Liberty, Hope, and Honor — in Parker, Colorado. The entire family was present for the ceremony.
The Congresswoman’s office proudly secured the long-overdue Purple Heart for O’Connor nearly 20 years after he should have received the honor. Elected officials and members of the community attended and joined in celebrating his service.
